Accessibility

The standard we aim for

We design and build this website to aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. As a Manitoba organization we also work toward the accessibility standards made under The Accessibility for Manitobans Act.

We have not yet had this site formally audited against WCAG 2.1 AA. We will say so here when we have, and publish the result.

What we’ve done

• Every page can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, and the focus indicator is always visible.
• A “skip to content” link lets keyboard and screen-reader users bypass the navigation.
• Text colour and background colour are chosen to meet the AA contrast ratio.
• Status and meaning are never carried by colour alone; they are always written out in words.
• Pages use real headings in order, so screen-reader users can navigate by structure.
• Form fields have visible labels that are correctly associated with the field, and required fields are marked in text, not just with a symbol.
• Images that carry meaning have text alternatives. Decorative images are marked so assistive technology skips them.
• Text reflows without horizontal scrolling down to a 320 pixel-wide screen, and the page still works when text is enlarged.
• Animation is kept minimal and is disabled for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion.

Where we know we fall short

• Product screenshots are images. We describe what each one shows in its alt text and caption, but the underlying data is not available as text on the page.
• Documents we publish as PDFs may not all be tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will provide the content in another format.
